Jeep Wrangler2007 to 2018 (JK)
Why owners choose it
Off-Road Capability
Every JK has four-wheel drive with a special low gear for steep climbs and rocky trails. Rubicon models add features that help on even tougher terrain.
Easy to Customize
Huge selection of aftermarket gear, including lift kits, bumpers, skid plates, and roof racks, making it easy to build for overlanding.
Solid Axles
Every JK has one solid bar connecting each pair of wheels, which keeps the tires on the ground over rocks and stays strong after adding a lift kit and bigger tires.
Trail Maneuverability
The two-door Wrangler is shorter than most SUVs, making it easier to navigate tight turns and narrow trails.
Things to Consider
Cargo Space
The four-door JK has about 32 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, compared with 47 in a five-seat 2018 4Runner. That leaves less room for camping gear without folding the seats.
Towing Capacity
The four-door JK can tow up to 3,500 lb when properly equipped, compared with 5,000 lb for a 2018 4Runner. That limits the size of camper or trailer you can bring.

Where to Start
You don't need to upgrade everything at once. Start with the basics, take a few easy trips, and add gear based on where you want to go.
Camping Essentials
A Place to Sleep
Sleep in a ground tent or in a rooftop tent.
Food & Water
Bring enough drinking water, a cooler or fridge for food, and a stove for cooking.
Safety & Recovery
Tires
Stock tires can handle easy dirt roads. All-terrain tires provide better grip and protection on rougher trails.
Traction Boards
Traction boards help you get unstuck by giving your tires something to grip in sand, mud, or snow.
Air Compressor
An air compressor lets you refill your tires after lowering their pressure for better traction off-road.
Depending on Your Trips
Roof Rack
The Wrangler has no factory roof rack. A rooftop tent requires a rack designed to safely support its weight, so check the weight ratings before installing one.
Cargo Storage
Storage organizers help keep camping gear secure and make better use of the Wrangler's limited cargo space.
Cold-Weather Gear
Start with warm bedding and insulated sleeping pads. For extreme cold, consider a properly vented heater designed for your setup.
